As the planned route of the proposed London-to-Birmingham high speed rail line continues to change direction, public opinion and the impact on our countryside, proAV can help organisations start saving now.
The new £33bn HS2 rail link will see trains travelling at more than 200mph and are predicted to cut journey times between London and Birmingham by around 30 minutes; a saving considered negligible by opposers of the scheme. Last month, the Transport Secretary confirmed that, so far, 50% of the preferred route has already been changed. In any event, it’ll be another 15 years of planning and protests before the benefits of this controversial project will be enjoyed by the commuters who want to save the time taken to get to their meetings.
So, rather than wait for the Transport Secretary to help tackle another north-south divide, companies are being advised to visit proAV’s Carbon Calculator and see how much more could be saved by holding a video conference instead. There won’t be a 15-year wait to start saving and it’ll be more than a 30 minute train journey that’ll tip the balance.

In 15 years from now, if train fares increase at the going rate, the cost of a high speed rail ticket could be enough to force many organisations to reconsider their modus operandi, but even on today’s costs, the savings on a two-hour video conference between offices in London and Birmingham makes for a serious proposition.
Based on two people travelling from Birmingham to London for a meeting, savings of £130, 6 hours 34 minutes in time and 43kg of CO₂, or 472 days’ energy spent running a home can be achieved. Not only that, the hassle of train delays and connections are eliminated and and staff are able to hold that meeting in the comfort and convenience of their own offices.
