The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust comprises three hospital sites, including Dewsbury and District Hospital, Pinderfields Hospital and Pontefract Hospital.
The Trust provides community, acute (hospital-based treatment) and specialist health services to around half a million people living in the Wakefield and North Kirklees areas. It also treats patients who choose to use its services from surrounding areas, including South Leeds, North Yorkshire, Barnsley and Doncaster.
As part of a major PFI construction project of two new state-of-the-art hospitals in Pontefract and Wakefield, proAV successfully tendered for a project to equip the Wakefield site’s new Education Centre. The three-storey Education Centre comprises a graduate education facility and Trust offices, including new Trust headquarters.
Smarter learning methods and reduced travel costs
proAV delivered an extensive, professional integrated solution for the Education Centre, featuring wide-ranging audio visual technologies, including multi-site video conferencing infrastructure and High Definition endpoints, integration with OCS platform for desktop video conferencing and industry leading presentation and control equipment to provide high quality and consistent education for the Trust’s medical staff and to attract the highest caliber medical students to the new Centre.
The Trust was also determined to develop smarter learning methods and to make learning materials more accessible; educational content can now be recorded and accessed on demand, reducing the need for repetitive room-based learning sessions.
The project to equip the Trust HQ and Education Centre satisfied a number of key presentation and communication requirements, including the ability to record medical procedures within the building onto computer systems for review and playback to aid students’ learning experience. In addition, the Education Centre systems had to interface with the Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting rooms in the new Pinderfields Hospital via video cameras fitted to pendants in theatres, transmitting multimedia over the data network.
As part of the Trust’s commitment to reduce travel costs between sites, focus on multi-site communication was integral to this project. For example, it was essential for education activities to be streamed across multiple sites reducing the need for attendees to travel and multi-site, multi-room video and audio conferencing is now the preferred meeting approach to avoid unnecessary travel between sites by Trust staff.
The Trust was also determined to develop smarter learning methods and to make learning materials more accessible; educational content can now be recorded and accessed on demand, reducing the need for repetitive room-based learning sessions.
The project was successfully delivered on time, within budget and according to the clients exacting specification. The result is an outstanding range of world class technologies and equipment that is providing the Trust’s Education Centre at Pinderfields Hospital with remarkable facilities for healthcare students and staff.
A number of specialist areas within the Trust HQ and Education Centre were equipped with the following professional AV technologies:
Ground Floor 00/14
- 94” diagonal 16:10 interactive white board
- DLP WUXGA (1920x1200) digital medical projector, ceiling mounted
- HDX video conferencing system, including PTZ camera,
- DVI matrix switcher, 4x4 VGA and stereo audio matrix switcher
- Video capture and external DVI capture hardware
- Audio system, including sound structure audio processor, ceiling microphones, front of house wall speakers, ceiling speakers and amplifiers
- Control system, including 10” LCD touch panel controller
Ground Floor 00/15 and 00/16
Each of the above rooms were equipped with the following:
- 1800mm wide electric projection screen
- SXGA projector, 3000 ANSI lumens, 4:3 aspect ratio, ceiling mounted
- Video equipment, including eight input scaling presentation switcher with PIP, in-ceiling PTZ camera system, video distribution amplifier and video capture and external DVI capture hardware
- Audio system, including ceiling microphones and active wall speakers
- Control system featuring 16 button controller and IP interface
Ground Floor 00/10 and 00/11
Each of the above rooms were equipped with the following:
- 87” diagonal 16:10 interactive white board
- WXGA LCD projector, 2600 ANSI lumens, 16:10 aspect ratio, ceiling mounted
- Video equipment, including eight input scaling presentation switcher and VGA distribution amplifier
- Active wall speakers
- Control system featuring 8 button control panel
Ground Floor 00/07, 00/08 and 00/09
Each of the above rooms were equipped with the following:
- 87” diagonal 16:10 interactive white board
- WXGA LCD projector, 2600 ANSI lumens, 16:10 aspect ratio, ceiling mounted

Lecture Theatre

- Lectern mounted SMART interactive 22” diagonal widescreen pen display, , 1920x1080 resolution
- HDX 8000 video conferencing system, with twin PTZ camera system, Freeview decoder, XGA visualiser, DVD and BluRay players, HDCP compliant DVI matrix switcher, RGB to DVI scaler, 12x8 ultra-wideband matrix switcher, video capture and external DVI capture hardware
- Audio solution, including presentation system with bodypack transmitter and clip on mic, vocal system with handheld transmitter, audio processor, 7.1 surround sound amplifier, 120w 100v amplifiers, gooseneck microphone, sub-woofer and surround speakers, front of house speakers, ceiling speakers and infra-red assisted listening system with stethoset receivers
