Liverpool John Moores University

Liverpool, UK

Originating in 1825, Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is one of the UK's largest universities with 24,440 students in Liverpool and a further 5540 students associated with 72 partner organisations. LJMU was the first, and is still the only, university to adopt the EFQM European Excellence Model which has enabled it to evolve into a forward-thinking, modern and commercially aware university.

proAV was called in to equip LJMU's new £32m Art and Design Academy building which is set in the heart of Liverpool's creative quarter and this year won an award for it's architectural design for Rick Mather Architects.

The sheer scale and state-of-the-art architectural scheme of the building presented many challenges which were naturally approached with proAV's traditional brand of innovation and enthusiasm 'proAV exceeded our expectations and showed a professional approach from tender submission through to completion.'Mark Nevitt, Mount Pleasant Resource Director, LJMUfrom the Education Division's design team.

A comprehensive range of conferencing, meeting, training and presentation rooms at this new purpose-built building required a forward thinking AV solution throughout. Indeed, sophisticated and wide ranging audio visual equipment that incorporates the industry's latest cutting-edge technology was installed across the new academy building.

Today, LJMU's new audio visual facilities include groundbreaking AV equipment from high-impact display systems to fully-interactive audio and video conferencing as well as bespoke lecture and multimedia presentation facilities. In addition, a dynamic digital signage network designed to manage displays from a central location was installed and exciting media content continues to dominate the academy building.

The project at LJMU was a great success and proAV has achieved considerable praise, not least from LJMU itself:

  • SXGA resolution DLP projection systems with HDMI switcher and matrix router

  • Controls via 8.4" wireless touch panel with full management of audio and visual input sources

  • Video input sources including Blue-ray HD DVD, multi-region DVD, network teaching PC with DVI output, XGA video visualiser with lightbox, wireless keyboard and mouse system
  • Audio input sources including programme sound and voice reinforcement systems with front of house speakers, ceiling speakers, in-wall speakers, flat panel speakers, gooseneck lectern microphone, UHF wireless system and presenters' tie-clip transmitter
  • Controls via technicians' wireless touch panel and 15" lectern-mounted touch panel with RGB and video preview, streaming and annotation software
  • Bespoke triple-width presentation lecture with secure housing for equipment, touch panel stand, laptop input plate and microphone light

Auditorium 2 and Control Room

  • Christie HD12K, 12000 ANSI Lumen DLP projection system with HDMI switcher and DVI matrix router
  • Video input sources including Blue-ray HD DVD, multi-region DVD, network PC with DVI output, SXGA video visualiser and wireless keyboard and mouse system
  • Audio input sources including programme sound and voice reinforcement systems with front of house speakers, ceiling speakers, gooseneck lectern microphone, UHF wireless system and presenters' tie-clip transmitter
  • 3 x CCD colour video cameras with remote control interface
  • Controls via technicians' wireless touch panel and 15" lectern-mounted touch panel with RGB and video preview, streaming and annotation software
  • Bespoke triple-width presentation lecture with secure housing for equipment, touch panel stand, laptop input plate and microphone light
  • Control room equipped with bespoke studio style gallery console, 32 channel live mixing desk, three way monitor with driver and tweeter, multi-format mixing desk, 2 x bank of 3 x4.5" preview monitors, 20" HD TFT broadcast monitor, DTE recorder and intercom station with 4 x headsets and dynamic microphones

Mobile System

  • SXGA LCD projector and switchers mounted on bespoke mobile presenter with lockable doors, projector shelf and laptop and auxiliary video input plate
  • Audio visual input sources including DVD, full range speaker system, UHF wireless system and presenters' tie-clip transmitter
  • Controls via 16 button panel-mounted controller

Digital Signage

Digital signage system incorporating networkable information distribution system and content distribution control over display equipment located in the following areas:

  • Reception: 46" wall-mounted full HD LCD display monitor with built-in speaker system
  • Cafeteria: 46" wall-mounted full HD LCD display monitor with built-in speaker system
  • Auditorium gathering space: 52" wall-mounted full HD LCD display monitor with built-in speaker system
  • Reception: Christie Roadster 12,000 SXGA+ DLP projection system
