Introduction

John Lewis is one of the UK’s most recognisable retail brands. With a heritage that dates back to 1864, the employee-owned organisation is now the country’s largest omni-channel retailer with 46 shops, 12 home furnishing stores, outlets at St Pancras International and Heathrow Terminal 2 and a thriving online business.

Its 91,500 permanent staff are Partners of the business who share in its success and all are committed to an ethos of quality, service and value. In the Verdict Consumer Satisfaction Awards 2016, the organisation was awarded ‘Best Click & Collect Retailer, Best Electricals Retailer, Best Furniture Retailer, Best Homewares Retailer and Best In-Store Experience.

The Brief & Technical Overview

proAV was commissioned directly by John Lewis to install state-of-the-art AV that would create a dynamic experiential Smart Home space within its flagship Oxford Street store and across prominent areas of its new landmark outlet in Leeds City Centre’s stunning Victoria Gate development. Both projects were designed to provide customers with novel and fully immersive shopping experiences that would see John Lewis recognised as ‘innovator of the retail space’ – creating places that customers would be inspired to visit time and again.

Oxford Street, London

When John Lewis reported an 18-fold year-on-year growth in shoppers searching for smart, home-related products online, it made the decision to create the first Smart Home space in the Oxford Street store it began trading from in 1864. Dedicated to smart home technology and a futuristic homage to the Internet of Things (IoT) concept, the 1,000 sqft Smart Home space on the store’s fifth floor was designed to give shoppers a contextual view of how its boxes of displayed products could be used within a real-life setting.

proAV was commissioned to install state-of-the-art home automation technologies and dynamic digital signage to present an exciting and very immersive buying experience that would give customers added value through physical interaction with goods. Four zones – ‘kitchen’, ‘sleep’, ‘entertainment’ and ‘home monitoring’ have been equipped with innovative ‘smart home’ AV technologies, including time-lapse video, phone-syncing displays and touchscreen controls.

Technical Overview

The key AV technologies that feature within the Smart Home space at John Lewis include the following:

- Multiple Samsung 55” and 65” LFD display screens

- Sedna digital signage players

- Crestron control system with AV3 processor and iPad App interface via iPad mini tablet

- Apple Mac Mini and Mac Pro to drive signage content and media creation

- Custom rackbuild solution

Victoria Gate, Leeds, UK

The five-storey, £37m John Lewis Store opened its doors in October 2016 and attracted over 2500 throughout its doors in the first hour’s trading. Set in the acclaimed Victoria Gate development in Leeds City Centre, the new store spans 255,000 square feet and is one of the largest John Lewis shops outside London.

proAV was commissioned to install pioneering AV that would focus customers’ attention as much onto their shopping experience as on the goods themselves. A Smart Home space similar to the one that features in the Oxford Street Store was again devised to promote home automation technologies within a wholly immersive environment. proAV was also tasked with installing audio visual systems throughout the new store’s digital staircase.

The imposing stairway comprises an array of multiple display screens designed to raise product awareness, increase sales and project the coveted John Lewis brand identity along with seasonal content. This powerful visual retail experience is synonymous with the organisation’s digital evolution that is being applied as a design standard across its stores.
